EDUCATION

 

Dr. Charity Fleming Smith is the Principal Associate for Education at Fetterman and Associates. 

After 16 years as Assistant Commissioner/Director for Education in Arkansas, she is now a full-time national consultant and lecturer.  Dr. Smith is the former Assistant Commissioner for the Arkansas Department of Education in the Division of Academic Accountability. In this capacity, she helped to ensure that all school districts in Arkansas were held accountable for improving school performance.  

During her tenure, Arkansas received national recognition in a number of areas, including rigorous academic standards, accountability, reporting, teacher quality, and consistent academic improvement. With a passion for excellence, she has help lead and implement initiatives that ranked Arkansas 6th in nation according to Education Week (2011).

Additionally, the performance in standards, assessment and accountability received one of the highest ratings.

Dr. Smith is a Rockefeller Distinguished Lecturer, the director of the Arkansas Legislative Black Caucus Think Tank, and founder of the Accelerated Academic Achievement Academy. Smith also co-hosted the event for the national unveiling of statues of the Little Rock Nine at the Arkansas State Capitol. A nationally requested consultant and presenter, her recent work includes Setting of Standards for the Arkansas Accountability Rating System (2010), and contributing authorship on Current Developments in K-12 Education: Near and Longer Term Trends (2007).

Dr. Smith received her Ed.D degree from University of Arkansas in Little Rock in 1998, and has worked as a practitioner, consultant, Keynote speaker, presenter, principal, state level program director, and assistant state commissioner of education.
